VENTED GAS LOGS are designed for beauty and convenience and ARE NOT designed to be a heating source because an open burning fireplace is the least efficient of all your choices. With the open damper and large fireplace opening, gas logs in your open fireplace uses conditioned (preheated) room air to provide combustion to the fire, and your chimney sucks away the heat produced by the fire at a faster rate than it can be recovered for usable heat in the home. Therefore, most open burning fireplaces (no matter the fuel, wood or gas) are 10% to minus 10% efficient - you're often sending more heat up the chimney than you're gaining in the room!
A GAS INSERT is a stove that inserts into an existing fireplace, offering a conversion from an open hole in the wall where heat escapes the house into a powerful heating source. Some models heat 1500 sq. ft. or more and can even provide thermostatic heating when a winter storm knocks out your heat. They also use much less gas than gas logs. NEW! Electronic ignition option! Electronic ignition allows you to turn the pilot light on and off with the remote control, which means you would not have a "standing" pilot. This feature is a requirement in some states due to energy efficiency standards. ($200 upcharge)
CHIMNEY REQUIREMENTS
These are VENTED GAS LOGS and must be installed only into a functioning, wood burning fireplace with a lined chimney. Minimum chimney size is 8" round, but the chimney area must be suitably sized for the fireplace opening size. If your fireplace does not draft properly, suffers from sooting or smoking problems then it is not safe to install gas logs until these performance issues are remedied!
Your fireplace damper, if one exists, must be removed or permanently clamped open upon installation; therefore we recommend installation of glass fireplace doors to help prevent heat loss when the gas logs are not in operation. VENTED GAS LOGS are a decorative product and are not designed to provide substantial heat. Check local building codes for further details and requirements prior to purchase - installation of decorative gas logs are not approved in some communities.
The control valve to turn the gas on and off is located on the side, which requires air space; this is why the fireplace must be a few inches wider at the front than the width of the logs.

Since there are no sparks, why is a FIREPLACE SCREEN required with gas logs? Primarily, a fireplace screen prevents clothing - like your favorite robe - from being sucked into the fireplace by the chimney draft, which can then ignite your clothing. All gas logs should have a fireplace screen in place when burning to prevent this danger as well as keeping kids and curious pets safely away from the flames. Chimney Caps are necessary when vented gas logs are installed. Since your fireplace damper must be either clamped open or removed for safety reasons - to prevent fumes, carbon monoxide and soot from entering your home - this leaves your gas logs vulnerable to being rained or snowed on. Make sure you have a chimney cap in place to keep weather and animals out of your chimney. We offer high quality stainless steel chimney caps and copper caps in a large variety of sizes.
